Tech Tip: Finicky Silverado throws oil pressure DTC

Aug. 23, 2024
Customer brought in their 2020 Chevy Silverado because the malfunction indicator light (MIL) was on.

A customer brought in their 2020 Chevy Silverado into a repair shop because the malfunction indicator light (MIL) was on. There were no drivability complaints. The owner mentioned that it was a fleet truck, and it just had the oil changed while out of town.

Case details

The technician connected a scan tool and found this diagnostic trouble code (DTC): P06DB - Engine Oil Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Control Circuit Low Voltage.

An ALLDATA Tech-Assist consultant suggested starting the diagnosis by making sure the "out of town" oil change was performed with the correct viscosity and a factory filter. If it was, then he should follow the DTC troubleshooting chart.

The technician checked the oil filter, and it was an aftermarket brand. He couldn’t tell if the oil viscosity was correct.

Confirmed repair

The technician changed the oil using an OEM filter and the recommended brand and viscosity of oil. He cleared the DTC and then took the truck for a road test. There were no further issues. Easy Fix!
